MONTE VISTA— On Thursday night Sangre de Cristo’ basketball squads traveled west on the Seven-mile to meet their league rival Sargent. The Thunderbirds got rowdy taking down Sargent in both games. The girls triggered a running clock in a 54-20 victory while the boys pulled away in the second half to earn a 44-24 win. 

Entering Friday’s game the Sangre de Cristo girls were a perfect 7-0 and primed to add another to that streak. The Sargent girls had built a two-game streak and were hoping to knock off a talented opponent.

Despite only dressing six players, Sangre de Cristo shot out of the gates to start the game building a 10-0 lead right away. Harlee Pepper broke the fast for the Farmers with a jumper with 30 seconds in left in the first quarter. Pepper was also the Farmers leading scorer with 6 points.

The damage however was already done. Those four baskets stood tall, as Sargent just couldn’t close the gap. The Thunderbirds continued to crank on Sargent adding to their lead as the game wore on. With four minutes left in the game a two pointer from Sangre de Cristo made the score 49-13 and ended stoppages for the remainder of the game.

Sophomore Lexi Metz of Sangre de Cristo led a potent offense hitting the Farmers for 16 points. Jessica Slane and Kylee Christianson were also productive each scoring double digits on the night. The Thunderbirds proceeded to take their eighth in convincing fashion 54-20. 

Both Sangre de Cristo and Sargent’s boys entered Thursday’s tilt with similar records. The Farmers were 5-2 and the Thunderbirds 6-1. And the two teams seemed to play a close game to reflect their close records.

The first half was a series of tied leads at 8, and again at 11. This game of cat and mouse would proceed into the second half as well as the score was once again knotted at 21 early in the third.  While Sangre de Cristo kept trucking Sargent fell stagnant. For the remainder of the 3rd quarter and all of the fourth the Farmers would only add three more points.

The Farmers would eventually trail by 20 points as they suffered their third loss of the season. Jake Slane paced the Thunderbirds with 14 points. Both Jared Sinclair and Cole Christianson also chipped in double-digit scoring performances.

For the Farmers the lead in scoring was shared between Blaine Behil and Ryan Davis with 6 points apiece. With the wins the Thunderbirds each extended their winning streaks the girls made it eight in a row in continuance of a perfect record while the boys earned their sixth straight.
