MONTE VISTA — It was an exciting and beautiful two days of competition for the 11th annual Sgt. Glen E. Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Veterans Golf Tournament on May 29 and 30.

The run/walk was held Saturday, May 29, and the golf tournament was held at the Monte Vista Golf Course, on Sunday, May 30 with a 4-man team, 18-hole scramble format. Fifteen teams participated.

The winning team — Vicente Barbosa, Brandon Cordova, Jacob Jiron and Greg Castro — finished with a score of 64 after a nail-biting playoff, beating out the team of Diondre Garcia, Mark Haas, Markus Ortiz and Mario Resendiz.  The third-place team was Lyle Dye, Marty Golden, Ken Michaels and Rich Sticklen with a score of 65.

“The Martinez family would like to thank the Monte Vista Golf Course for hosting the golf tournament,” the family stated. “A big thank you to Luke Porter for preparing and grooming the golf course so nicely and to his friend Bret Newmeyer for flipping all the burgers for the lunch after the golf tournament was finished.”

The Martinez family also thanked Hole Sponsors — Ron Swartz, Brad and Jamie Swartz, Dr. Brian Roberts and Mary Kay, Dr. David Hinkley, Annavee and family, State Farm, American Legion Jas G. Hamilton Post No. 53, Rio Grande Bank, SLV Federal Bank and Taqueria Y Antojitos Los Lopez.

The overall winner of the 5K Run was John Naranjo in 21 minutes and 0.08 seconds, followed by Jeremy Trujillo (21:14.56) and Daniel Acosta (22:56.06). Naranjo also won the 41-50 men’s age group, while Trujillo and Acosta were first and second in the 31-40 men’s age group.

Lily Heersink was the overall women’s winner (27:07.06), followed by Jayden Wubben (27:09.64) and Jenny Owsley (28:08.23). Heersink and Wubben were first and second in the 10-14 women’s age group and Owsley won the 31-40 women’s age group.

The overall winner of the 5K Walk was Nicole Pilato (46:05.13), followed by Randy Martinez (51:59.22) and Janette Martinez (49:44.59).

“We appreciate all the golfers, runners and walkers that participated and their families who gave up their Memorial weekend to honor our son Glen. And thank the Lord for such a beautiful weekend and holding off the rain until Monday,” the family stated.
