Schlabach clarifies position

Dear Editor,

It has come to my attention my previous letter to the editor hurt some people’s feelings. My intent was not to hurt anyone. I simply wanted to highlight the fact there are, at least, two sides to the story. I allowed my frustration to show and I take full responsibility for my actions.

While I acknowledge I was politically incorrect with my previous letter, I remain firm in my convictions. I realize this community needs primary jobs, as our mayor so eloquently explained in a recent city council meeting. The average annual income per adult in Monte Vista is $17,190.00. If folks can barely pay the rent, they are spending very little money on retail and dining.

Throughout my tenure as a member of the Monte Vista City Council I have demonstrated, on a number of occasions, I am committed to primary jobs, to include working with the rest of council to provide financial aid for Proximity Malt and helping the Upper Rio Grande Economic Development group continue to bring in more value added agriculture and tourism.

There were some who took issue with Matthew’s service to our country. Being a veteran is not a hall pass and those who abuse the “veteran card” need to be held accountable. Matthew did not ask me to mention his service and he has never implied being a veteran should provide him with a higher “status” than any other person. However, he is proud of his service and the leadership he developed in the Marine Corps. Simply ignoring how he has demonstrated selflessness and dedication to his country and community does not change what he has done.

We have to acknowledge the truth, inconvenient or not, and make sure we demonstrate integrity. The truth is, I can be a bit blunt and direct sometimes and I need to work towards being more considerate of others’ feelings. If you have any issue with what I have said or done, you can contact me at [email protected]. I am always willing to listen to constructive criticism, suggestions, and I definitely welcome new ideas.

Respectfully,

Joe Schlabach,

Monte Vista
