MONTE VISTA — Thursday night was a volleyball meeting between two teams in need of a win. Host Sargent took the league meeting by a score of 3-0.
Sargent (5-8) recently completed a tour of the top Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) ranked volleyball teams in the state; facing Lamar (No. 8, 3A), Limon (No. 2, 2A) and Fowler (No. 6, 2A) in concurrent games. The Farmers went 0-3 over that span.
Center (1-16) is similarly hungry as their last win was the second game of the season and they were shut out of the win column throughout September.
When the game got underway Center would take a 3-0 lead early in the first set. Sargent later answered with their own 3-point run and the game would stay within a point to a 10-9 score.
Sargent’s Kamryn Holland took the service line. With Holland on the backline the Farmers put the set out of reach with 8 straight points. Holland scored the final kill to hand the Farmers the win in the first set 25-19.
Neither squad blinked in the second set trading side-outs and runs to a 21-19 lead for the host Farmers. Sargent would score the final run with 4 straight to claim a 25-19 win extending their lead to 2-0 on the match.
Things began very competitively in what would become the final set of the match. A flurry of side-outs and the two teams stayed close 6-5, Sargent’s lead.  It was all Sargent from there on as Sargent outscored Center 19-4 down the stretch to claim a 25-9 win in set three. The 3-0 win against Center sweeps the league series between the two for the Farmers 2-0.
Next for the Vikings will be a non-league game against the Watermeloneers of Rocky Ford (9-5). Center will be on the road against Rocky Ford Saturday, Oct. 19th at 11 a.m. Sargent will play league rival Sanford. Sanford and Sargent meet tonight at 4 p.m.
