Sargent Community Church to celebrate 100 years

MONTE VISTA—The Sargent Community Church congregation is finalizing plans for the 100th year celebration on Sunday, June 24 at the church, 6985 N County Rd. 2 E, Monte Vista.
Rev. Lester Huseby, pastor of the church invites everyone.  He said, “celebrating 100 years of ministry is a gift to be celebrated by all of us.” The day will begin with regular worship service at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch, then a time of music, sharing and then, more refreshments. Several of the former ministers are planning to attend, as well as many who attended this church before the present building was constructed.
The church, comprised of nine or 10 small Sunday schools, was officially organized in June of 1918, by the first minister Rev. David Elmer Nourse, following two months of preliminary work.
The Sargent Consolidated School District had become a reality the previous year. Church activities were held in the building which is now the elementary school and four years later the high school building was completed and church and Sunday School were held in that building.
Rev. Nourse, his wife and three daughters were living in Monte Vista until he suggested tents be set up on the corner where the present parsonage is. They lived in these tents until over-heated stoves caused a fire and they were left without a home. A building committee was immediately appointed and the first week in October was set as the date for solicitation of funds.
The history, written by Ruth Mathias, said funds came in promptly and the parsonage, having seven rooms and a bath was completed quickly as the church clerk records a board meeting was held in the parsonage on the following Jan. 7.  The parsonage has been added to and renovated. This is one example of this rural community working together for the good of others and exemplifies the community’s culture of today as well.
The present church building was dedicated on Aug. 16, 1959. The people with the guidance of the trustees work together to help maintain the churches property. A generous donation was made by church members in recent years to redecorate and improve the kitchen appliances. The building serves as a meeting place for several organizations and activities besides those of the church.
More interesting history and information will be forthcoming about the Sargent Community Church and its ministry.
