Sargent 100-year reunion committee finalizes business

MONTE VISTA— Sargent School will be hosting a 100-year reunion and anniversary celebration on July 1. The reunion committee met on Thursday evening, June 15 at Sargent Community Church to finalize some of the details for the event.
Regular registrations for alumni to attend have closed but late registrations will still be accepted for $25, but is capped at 50 additional attendees. The current count of attendees as of Thursday’s meeting is 276 alumni plus nine student volunteers who will be assisting with tours. Registrations will begin at 9a.m. with the reunion events beginning at 10 a.m. in the auditorium. It will include an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, welcoming comments from Board of Education President David Steinert and Principals Ronna Cochran and Joni Hemmerling. A group photo will be taken at this time as well. Building tours will begin at 10:30 a.m. led by students, so they can discuss the history of the schools. The luncheon will be served buffet-style at noon and will be provided by Locavores (co-owner Matt Seger is a 1999 Sargent High School graduate). There will be another group picture at the football field at 1:30 p.m.then tours and visiting time will continue until 3:30 p.m. For those interested, Harriet DeFreece has reserved the south room of Dos Rios at 6 p.m. for dinner as well.
The committee reviewed and approved the map at their meeting. The commons area will include tables for the Education Foundation, the proposed Landscape Project, an Empty Chair Memorial and two other vendor spaces. Books about Sargent’s history will be for sale at the event and historical memorabilia and pictures of the schools and students over the last century will be in the display cases in the hallways, visible for those on tours. The tables for lunch include vases with pictures of each graduating class taken from yearbooks, and each classes’ senior pictures will be featured on the tablecloths as well.
Darwin Thompson discussed sending out a follow-up letter to get more statistical information from the attendees, like current location, in order to set up a series of fun awards, recognizing the alumni who travelled the furthest distance for example. The committee felt it was too late to get much response in letters or emails but Clay Mitchell has much of that information already from registration forms and payments and those manning the table could gather anything else missing. The event’s emcee and program designer, John Tillman, requested a specific list as early as possible for announcing the awards. The final matter discussed at the meeting was parking and the distance from the gym, the committee will attempt to get golf carts with volunteers to drive attendees to and from their cars.
