MONTE VISTA—Sargent School District is pleased to announce their 2016-17 Teacher of the Year, Kendra Sanderson. She teaches fourth grade at Sargent Elementary and was selected for this recognition by her peers.
Kendra is a Sargent graduate; she continued her education with a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from Adams State University. She began teaching at Sargent Elementary in 2014. She is a life-long learner, who dreamed of becoming a teacher when she was a student at Sargent Elementary.
Students in Ms. Sanderson’s classroom learn through a variety of methods, as a broad range of instructional techniques are utilized. They receive encouragement to persevere with challenging tasks and differentiated instruction according to their ability and skill level. Ms. Sanderson fully appreciates the importance of her responsibilities as she strives to build self-esteem in each of her students while maintaining high expectations. Her strategy is a successful one, as a majority of her students have achieved adequate yearly progress in yearly assessments.
In addition to teaching responsibilities Sanderson previously served as the district assessment coordinator and has received a number of certifications and has completed training allowing her provide in-service opportunities to fellow teachers and to specialize in specific areas. She is also a student council adviser, National Elementary Honor Society adviser and a mentor teacher.
Sanderson is passionate about education and her career—she has expressed how grateful she is for each of the relationships formed with “her kids” and for the opportunity to hold such a potentially significant role in their lives.
