Romero named MVHS boys basketball coach

MONTE VISTA — After a successful tenure in Antonito, Coach Jeremy Romero has elected not to hang up his whistle just yet. Romero has taken the head coach position for the Monte Vista boys’ basketball team.
The Pirates team that Romero will inherit was last in the Intermountain League last year. The Pirates reside in one of the most competitive leagues in 3A basketball. Bayfield took home the 3A title this winter, Alamosa played in the title game two years prior and is a contender every year. Not to mention the likes of Pagosa Springs and Montezuma-Cortez both of which took part in last season’s state tournament.
While Monte Vista’s roster graduated seniors they did retain important pieces like David Mascarenas and Darrius Garcia. Monte Vista has a reputation as accurate shooters with the propensity to get hot from downtown.  Two years prior the Pirates shot a commendable 31 percent from downtown as a team.
This should fit Romero’s coaching style quite well. At Antonito Romero coached two snipers, just last season Alyssa Romero hit on 67 percent of her recorded shots while Joslyn Garcia shot at a 59 percent clip from behind the line. Antonito as a team shot 56 percent from the arc.
Romero will also bring a winning mentality with him from Antonito. As the head coach of the Trojans Romero presided over four winning seasons and a 66-29 regular season record.  In that time Antonito made Regionals three times and played in the State tournament once.
