Rio Grande County Jail inmate arrested after escaping

DEL NORTE — A Monte Vista woman was taken back into custody after escaping from the Rio Grande County Jail on Monday, Aug. 2, according to the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, at 1:44 p.m., while walking the short distance from the Rio Grande County Courthouse to the Jail, Misty Baca, 29, of Monte Vista slipped her shackles and took off running. Baca was in court for a probation complaint.

The jail deputy who was transporting her ran after her, the sheriff’s office reported. She ran down Cherry Street, up 6th Street and into a backyard on 7th and Oak streets. She entered a camper and changed out of her orange inmate jumpsuit.

She then entered another residence and attempted to make a phone call, the sheriff’s office reported. Shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, Baca was eventually found by law enforcement in the residence and jailed.

The Del Norte Police Department and Colorado State Patrol assisted Rio Grande County Sheriff’s deputies on the incident.

Baca was charged with suspicion of escape, second-degree burglary and theft.
