Rattlers take on Chaulk Creek Stampede

NATHROP, Colo.—The new Rio Grande Rattlers High School Mountain Bike Team traveled to Nathrop on Oct. 7 for their final regular season race.
Sophomore girls competed in the first race with the course ringed by yellow cottonwood trees and snow-capped mountains. Kristen David (Sargent HS) finished strong in 15th place with a time of 1:18:59. In the junior varsity race rider Devin Arellano (Alamosa HS) finished in 78th place out of out 143 riders with an 18-mile time of 1:35:42. Jackson Mumper (Alamosa HS) ended in 94th place 1:45:43 and Rand Kidd (Sargent HS) finished in 105thth place with a time of 1:48:45.
Cameron Roberts (Monte Vista HS) finished in 4th place out of a field of 130 freshmen with a time of 53:16:75 for the 12 mile race. Ryan Astalos (Alamosa HS) finished in 104th place with a time of 1:17:25. Daniel Macias (Monte Vista HS) came in 113th place with a time of 1:22:14. Landon Tolsma (Sargent HS) finished in 114th in a time of 1:22:23.
The final overall series results for the southern division of the Colorado High School Mountain Bike League show Arellano in 86th, Mumper in 108th and Kidd in 118th place out of 171 riders in the junior varsity completion. David is in 20th place out of 31 riders as a sophomore girl. In the freshmen standings Roberts is in 7th, Astalos in 104th, Tolsma in 127th and Macias in 143rd place out of 163 riders.  
Roberts and David both qualified for the State Championship race on Sunday, Oct. 22 in Eagle, Colo.
The Rattlers helped to mark the course and served as course marshals for the 12 Hours of Penitence Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, Oct. 14th. Proceeds from this event support Youth on Bikes including the Rattlers Team.
