MONTE VISTA—Two outgoing school board members were honored and shown appreciation at the Tuesday, Oct. 17 meeting of the Monte Vista City Council. Elizabeth Conner and Beverly Martinez who chose not to seek re-election were presented plaques for their work on the school board.
School Board President Matt Nehring presented the tokens of appreciation to the board members. “I certainly appreciate both of you for the work that you’ve done over the last several years. I’m appreciative of the entire board. I think we have one of the better and more functioning boards around the Valley and around the state. That doesn’t mean we don’t have serious discussions or disagreements but we’re always looking out for what’s right for the kids. It’s been a pleasure to work with all of you,” said Nehring.
During the public comments Cathy Armstrong also expressed her appreciation. “I realized that we don’t generally say thank you enough to each other enough for all the work that we do. That’s especially true of the school board. I want to thank you guys for working so hard for us; you do make our lives that much easier, even though they’re really hard sometimes.
“I want to share a few things about Elizabeth. I want to thank her for filling my classroom with books. For 17 years whether or not I have had one of her children in my class she has bought me books. She was one of the very first people to donate personal money to have the buildings we have now...she volunteers to help with our swimming program. She has greatly volunteered in the classrooms for years. As a board member she has passed out Christmas cards with wonderful little treats. I really want to thank her and the whole board.
