Becker takes mayor reins

MONTE VISTA—A new mayor and two new councilors took the oath of office at the Thursday, Jan. 4 meeting of the Monte Vista City Council. Dale Becker, took seat as mayor, and Victor Sigala and Gary Johnson took seats as councilors. Sigala was unanimously appointed mayor pro tem.

The council still has one vacant seat after the December resignation of Carol Schroeder. The council is taking applications for the open seat and will make a decision at the Thursday, Jan. 18 regular meeting. Council members also serve on several boards and commissions. The newly elected members tabled appointments to these commissions and boards until a new councilor is chosen.

 

Outgoing members honored

 

City Clerk Unita Vance also took time to thank the four outgoing members for their years of service before the new council members took the oath of office. Previous Mayor Debbie Garcia, Mayor Pro Tem Carol Shroeder, Council Jason Lorenz and Councilor Matthew Martinez were thanked and honored and given a plaque in appreciation.

“On behalf of all the city staff we’d like to thank you for serving on the city of Monte Vista council. As your term of service ends and you leave this council, we, the city of Monte Vista staff, want you to know that your commitment to the city has been greatly appreciated. It is through community leaders like you who have made the city of Monte Vista able to provide service to the citizens and to help make the community a better place,” said Vance.

“Debbie Garcia, we want to thank you for your nine years of dedicated service. Carol Schroeder, thank you for your six years of dedicated service. Jason Lorenz, thank you for your six years of dedicated service. Matt Martinez, thank you for your four years of dedicated service,” she said.

“You’ve each made a difference for the city of Monte Vista and now you will start a new adventure. We want you all to know that we wish you the very best and the brightest future. May you all have many successes in your future, and may you always remember how much you were appreciated by the staff here at the city of Monte Vista and the citizens of Monte Vista.”

 

New officer welcomed

Joshua Hill was welcomed as a new police officer for the Monte Vista Police Department. “Josh came to us a month ago and is doing really well in our FTO (field training) program. He’s been a certified police officer for three years. He worked for the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office. He comes with a lot of experience...we’re happy to have him,” said Monte Vista Chief of Police John Rosecrans.

Hill was administered the oath of office by Rosecrans. Officer Hill was joined on stage by his wife and his 17-month-old son. “I’ve been married to my wife for about three years. We’ve had a good life in the Valley for the short time we’ve been here. Thank you for having us. I look forward to serving this community to the best of my abilities,” said Hill.
