ALAMOSA — Last Tuesday afternoon both Monte Vista and Alamosa played host to Salida in a meet that started at Cattails and finished at the Monte Vista Golf Club. The Mean Moose squad took first in the traveling meet with a team score of 293.
It has been a difficult spring season for everyone. Snow cancellations and postponements have put schedules for every spring sport in the spin cycle. While it hasn’t been easy on anyone, girl’s golf has been having an especially difficult time. Alamosa’s club looked like they may forego a home invite with Cattails Golf Course making upgrades to the sprinkler system and wound up having to move their April 26th invitational to an mid-April triangular to get ahead of the construction.
With the vacant spot Monte Vista moved their home invite to the 26th. Which would have worked out fine, but then Pueblo County’s Invite was postponed to the 26th due to weather. With both valley teams planning on being in attendance at Hollydot golf course it was then the Pirates that looked like they may well be out of a home invite.
The two Valley teams struck a compromise and Tuesday’s meet became a shared home meet. The trio of golf clubs began on the back nine at Cattails and continued to Monte Vista where they would finish up.
The Mean Moose took first place as a team thanks to their two leading girls Lora Ortega and Rhiley Hacsi. Both Ortega and Hacsi left Alamosa having shot 47. At the Monte Vista Golf Club Ortega edged her teammate by one stroke to finish first on the team and second overall with a 95 total. Hacsi finished third overall. Torince Hensley and Charlie Vigil rounded out the Alamosa team shooting 102 and 108 respectively.
As a team Monte Vista took second on the day. The Pirates got a stand out performance from Gracie Burkhart who placed first overall. Burkhart left Alamosa with a 35 and stayed on track in Monte Vista to shoot 78. Natalia Cendejos finished second on the team with a 102 followed by Makayla Larimore and Rebecca Deacon with a 120 and a 122 respectively.
Monte Vista’s next action will be in Invitational hosted by Trinidad on April 25th.
