MDS works to give back to community

CREEDE— MDS Waste and Recycle has been in business in Creede for 23 years. The trash service was started by Jonathan Graham when he bid on the Creede City contract in 1995 and has been offering services in Creede and Mineral County since.

According to the website, Graham graduated from Baylor University and moved to Creede after he won the bid. “This has been a business built on love and labor for a long time,” said Melissa Graham, Jonathan’s wife and business partner.

About 10 years later, the business began to spread out across the Valley, offering their trash services to areas surrounding Creede, like South Fork, Del Norte and now Monte Vista. It was three years ago, when MDS began to pick up single stream recycling, offering a service that was otherwise unavailable. The company now offers recycling services in all four areas and hopes to expand in the near future. They also have recycling drop-off centers at the Mineral and Rio Grande County landfills where people can recycle single stream material.

Throughout the past 23 years, MDS has brought residential, commercial and recycling services to the Valley and even offers roll-off dumpsters for large construction sites or other locations in need of large trash receptacles. Now, with the help of local businesses MDS is working to give back to the customers that have given them support over the years.

MDS launched a contest for customers about nine weeks ago called Locals Supporting Locals. The contest allows customers, both residential and commercial to participate in something special. The contest selects a winner every Monday from now until June 4 to receive three prizes. Winners get a $25 trash credit to go towards their monthly bill, a MDS sweatshirt, T-shirt and a $50 gift card to other local businesses who support MDS.

“This is a great way to give back to both our customers and help support local businesses at the same time. It’s really exciting,” said Melissa. The contest is open to current customers of MDS and anyone who wishes to participate can sign up for MDS services to do so. There are three ways to sign up for the contest: text letstalktrash or freetrash to 33222 or visit their website at www.mdswasteandrecycle.com and follow the link titled Locals Supporting Locals. Either way takes participants to a link to fill out an easy form with basic information.

“We have been doing this for about nine weeks, and we would like to see more of our customers take advantage of the contest. At the end of the contest on June 4, each winner will be entered into a drawing to receive a Yeti 45 cooler courtesy of San Juan Sports here in Creede,” finished Melissa.
