Letter to the Editor: Vote yes on 6A

As a board member of the Monte Vista Fire Protection District for over 20 years, I’m asking for your support in our upcoming election. Please vote yes on 6A. This ballot amendment is an increase in our local taxes which no one likes or wants, but let’s consider what will happen if we do not pass this 1.5 mill levy increase.

We will not be able to keep up with our ever-increasing costs, utilities, protective gear, repairs, fuel, extraction tools, trucks, hoses, and training to name a few. We are all proud of our 22 volunteer firefighters in Monte Vista and how they keep us safe. They average 20 emergency responses per month, this year even more with the dry conditions.

Our community also benefits because of the superb Fire District Rating of 3Y, the highest rating possible for a volunteer fire department. That means everyone in our community pays lower insurance premiums on their homes.

You may ask, what does 6A mean for me? Let’s look at an assessed home value of $100,000 for example. 6A means you would pay an extra $10.73 per year. That is less than 3 cents per day. Keep in mind, the Fire Department has not asked for an increase in over 25 years.

As a member of the community, I know that if I call 911 for an accident or fire, I want and expect a fully trained, fully equipped, and fully prepared team headed out to help me from the Monte Vista Fire Station.

By voting YES on 6A, we can continue to enjoy the benefits of our professional fire department.
Thank you in advance for your support on 6A.
