LETTER TO THE EDITOR - Student questions BOE procedure

Dear Editor,
I read Ms. Chelsea’s article about the emergency board meeting on May 15, 2017. I really do love her writing, but it says, and I quote “only parents, students and citizens” were allowed to speak. I was not allowed to speak. I put my name on the list right under my father’s name, because they asked us to do that if we wanted to speak, but they skipped me.
Ms. Chelsea was not there when I stood up and said, “Excuse me; excuse me. Uh, excuse me. Excuse me! I sensed that Mr. Nehring was trying to ignore me. He finally responded, “Yes.”
“I got skipped.”
“Well, we don’t want students to speak.”
“Why not?”
“Because we don’t want you talking among yourselves. You can speak through your parents.”
“WELL, THAT’S A LIE!”
I admit, I could have reacted better, but I was very upset. I was so upset I started to cry. Ms. [Corin] Romero is one of my favorite teachers and she is always there for the students, not just for science, but for them personally. She was always kind to me. Oh, by the way, Ms. Chelsea was correct. Mr. Webb did say “parents, students and citizens” would be allowed to speak. He lied.
I would like to share my gratitude with Ms. Romero. You are an amazing teacher. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Bell, Monte Vista
