Letter to Editor: SLV Fast Friends bringing back dirt drag racing

Editor,

SLV Fast Friends, in conjunction with the OptiMystics Citizens Action Network, the City of Monte Vista, Rio Grande County, and the Best Western Movie Manor entertainment complex, will bring dirt drag racing back to the San Luis Valley on June 2-4, 2023. After a three-year hiatus, traditional hot rods and race cars will once again roar down the one-eighth-mile course on the site of a historic dirt airfield to the west of US Highway 160, near the foothills of the San Juan Mountain range.

Unlike the previous events of this type at this venue, Draggin’ on Dirt will be staffed by volunteers, with all proceeds after expenses being donated to the San Luis Valley 4-H Foundation’s Scholar Support program. This will benefit youth in the San Luis Valley in a number of endeavors.

As SLV Fast Friends is starting from scratch, this event’s success depends on gathering sponsors and donors to pay for the materials and services needed in order to make it happen. Anyone wishing to donate to this worthy cause will have their contribution acknowledged in many ways, from having their business or other name emblazoned on the event t-shirts, posters, and banners as well as listed on several sites online. As SLV Fast Friends is being fiscally sponsored by the OptiMystics Citizens Action Network, a 501c3 organization, all donations are tax-exempt, allowing donors to write off their contribution.

All interested parties wishing to become a sponsor or donor are encouraged to contact SLV Fast Friends founder and director Larry Garner at [email protected], 719-588-8566, or on the SLV Fast Friends group on Facebook.

Donations can be mailed to SLV Fast Friends, P.O. Box 535, Hooper, CO 81136-0535.
