MONTE VISTA — Friday night marked the second meeting between Sanford and Sargent. Sanford took the first contest handily. Things played out quite a bit different the second time but in the end Sanford found a way to take the win by a score of 36-31.
Sargent (7-11) was the underdog entering their contest with 12th ranked Sanford (14-4) Friday night. Sargent closed January and opened February with three straight wins but followed that up by falling to No. 2 Del Norte and No. 7 Swink. Sanford meanwhile, knocked off their last four opponents after dropping a contest to Del Norte Jan. 26.
Sargent didn’t show any sign of being the underdog however and would strike quickly and efficiently. Lainie Dillon, Alexia Aguilar and Jenni Johnson put the Farmers up 6-0 early. Mackenzie Peterson would get Sanford on the board to escape the first quarter with Sargent leading 10-2.
In the second quarter Sanford turned the tables. Down 19-14 with less than two minutes remaining in the half Abbey Sittler would steal and score, Cheyenne Caldon would follow with a steal and score of her own completing a 6-point run from Sanford, the half would arrive with Sargent leading 20-18. Five points from either team the third quarter would start the fourth quarter with Sargent leading by the same slim two point margin.
A toe-to-toe battle ensued.
With ties at 25 and 27 points, Peterson and Asia Caldon went back-to-back for four straight points to definitively take the lead for Sanford. Asia Caldon hit two three pointers and led Sanford in scoring with 10 points.
Having taken a two-possession lead Sanford would hold on to that lead through the remainder of the final quarter to snag the win. The team lead in scoring went to Lainie Dillon. With the win Sanford sweeps the season series over Sargent.
