MONTE VISTA— Hundreds of classic cars sped their way into Monte Vista over the weekend for the fifth annual Hot Rod Dirt Drags. The cars and their owners made the trip to compete from all over the United States. The weekend was full of fan activities for participants and those who attended to cheer on their favorite racers.
The fun kicked off on Friday afternoon. All events all took place at the Best Western Movie Manor with the dirt drags racing on the old civil defense air strip behind the drive-in movie theater and hotel; this gave the dirt drags a very authentic and classic feel. The car show on the green began on Friday afternoon, with many classic cars available to be admired by onlookers. There was also a Johnny Martin Pig Roast that was enjoyed by attendees. Racing started on Friday night, which was followed by drive-in movies. This year new release movies, Godzilla and A Dog’s Journey, played for the entertainment of the racers and crowd.
The fun continued Saturday with the biggest attendance the weekend saw. The dirt drag races really picked up speed as the competition grew more fierce. The car show on the green had a good amount of unique vehicles to view, and there were vendors, food and music. In the evening there was a party at the drive-in where awards were presented, and concessions were available. There was also a wedding anniversary cake for Nick’s Hot Rod Garage Owners Nick and Amy (the entertaining flag girl), who were married at the third annual Hot Rod Dirt Drags in 2017.
Sunday was the final day of the multiple-day event, but certainly was not outdone. The racers put on an exciting show for the “Sunday funday” attendees. Proud car owners continued to show off their classic and custom tailored vehicles. The fifth annual Hot Rod Dirt Drags was another engine-roaring success.
