Homelake residents enjoy annual breakfast in Rock Creek

MONTE VISTA — Once a year, Homelake Veterans have a special breakfast at the picnic area in Rock Creek. Staff members get up early, and head up before sunrise to begin cooking breakfast for the Veterans. This year’s breakfast was on Aug. 31.

Pam Self, the Marketing and Admissions Director for the Veteran’s Community Living Center at Homelake, spoke about the breakfast and said that the weather was ideal for the event. Thirty-five residents signed up to attend the breakfast this year.

“The weather was just perfect for this year’s breakfast,” Self said. “As soon as the sun rose above the mountains it warmed up very quickly. We have been hosting this annual breakfast for over 20 years, and we think this year has held the warmest weather yet. I also believe that this was one of our best attended Rock Creek breakfasts.”

Coffee, bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, hashbrowns, tortillas and green chili, were served to the residents.

Self-stated, “As you know, everything just tastes better in the mountains, by a campfire. This year’s menu did not allow anyone to leave hungry. It was really neat to listen to our residents’ sharing stories about camping adventures they had in the past while they ate breakfast. I have the best job in the world.”

Many of the Homelake residents have attended the breakfast for a number of years. They ride in multiple handicap accessible buses to the Rock Creek picnic grounds to the breakfast. Many residents are in wheelchairs, or have canes, but get up gladly to attend the breakfast, according to Self. They enjoy the morning and their breakfast with their friends at the picnic grounds, socializing and eating.

The Veteran’s Community Living Center at Homelake provides a tranquil and comfortable place for disabled and aging Veterans to live serenely and among other veterans. The center believes in providing its residents with heartfelt and protective care.

The services they offer are nursing home, independent living with assistance, short-term rehabilitation, and short-term respite care with home care, and end of life hospice services.

The center also offers Veterans their own post office, bank services, a chapel, and indoor common areas that are laid out specifically for the veterans.
