Harlem Wizards visit Monte

MONTE VISTA— An odd looking group of basketball players known as the Harlem Wizards descended upon Monte Vista on Thursday night. Dressed in blue, red and yellow gym clothes they took on the local team, “The Monte Magic” that was comprised of teachers, principals, firefighters and police officers.

From New York the Harlem Wizards defeated the Monte Magic by a score of 82-70. The Wizards defeated the Monte Magic but not without an evening full of hilarious hijinks. They encouraged the audience to dance and clap along with their soundtrack of popular hits that accompanies their show.

Even though the home team lost, Monte Vista Middle School still won. The event was a fundraiser for a Monte Vista Middle School baseball field scoreboard. The Monte Vista High School gymnasium was full of community members who supported the cause and enjoyed the game.

Throughout the night Wizard player “King Arthur” delivered most of the laughs. Being the shortest player on the roster that visited he got the audience immediately chuckling as he came out when the tallest player was being announced.

Other funny moments occurred when King Arthur and other players jokingly flirted with women in the audience. They picked up audience members in their arms as well each other.

A few fouls occurred during the game. One was committed by a member of the Monte Magic and King Arthur chased them around the auditorium with a chair, screaming “We don’t do that to teammates. I’m from the streets!” A team doctor was called since the “injured” Harlem Wizard was on the floor unconscious. His remedy was placing a smelly shoe under the player’s nose which helped him immediately gain consciousness from the strong stench.

Another foul was on a member of the Monte Magic by King Arthur. He told the player he was sorry and demanded that referee Jaime Hurtado blow his whistle. As the player attempted his free throw King Arthur crawled under and loudly screamed. He also pulled up the player’s gym shorts. King Arthur was hugged and picked up by the member of The Monte Magic. King Arthur yelled and got away stating, “No means No!”

King Arthur also stole an audience member’s purse in an attempt to get her to dance with him. The Wizards also appeared to take selfies on her phone. The audience member informed King Arthur she was married and did not dance with him. King Arthur danced with her husband instead.

A moment of sincerity was offered by King Arthur as well. He reminded audience members of the importance of medical checkups and screenings. He stated that some of his family members had been diagnosed with cancer but were alive today because of medical screening. He also encouraged audience members to show love rather than hate in their everyday lives.

Late in the final fourth quarter King Arthur threw a cup of water on another Harlem Wizard and splashed some audience members. Seeking retaliation a bucket of water was carried around by the Harlem Wizards. The announcer “Big Show” pleaded with the players to stop playing with water.

It appeared that the Wizards were going to splash several audience members with their buckets of water. As the crowd began bracing and screaming in anticipation of being soaked the buckets flew and out popped long confetti string instead. With that the game and performance ended as the audience left with a smiles on their faces.
