SANFORD — In Sanford High School gym Sargent (6-5) donned their new jerseys and took on Sanford (6-5). The Farmers were successful winning by a score of 52-36.  
Sanford entered competition on Saturday as winners of their last two. Meanwhile Sargent saw their two game run go up in smoke the night before in a 47-36 loss to Del Norte.
The old proverb states “Live by the sword, die by the sword” and the same concept applies to three-pointers. Without a big presence in the paint like Dalton Gartrell Sanford’s offense was weighted towards perimeter shots. And when your distance shooters are cold you have a night like Saturday night.  
According to preliminary stats Sanford attempted 34 shots from three-point range and were on the mark for just 11 percent of those. Those lost possessions piled up as the game went on. Sargent took a 12-5 lead after one thanks to Jermaine Charlie hitting two of his three attempts from downtown.
Sargent spent a large portion of the second quarter at the free throw line going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and taking a 24-11 lead to the half.
The second half was host to a quick flurry from The Green Machine.  Sanford’s Thomas Faucette got  fouled on a lay-up and completed the three-point play. Another basket from the Sanford junior and the boys in green were on a Faucette-fueled scoring spree of five unanswered points. A technical foul sent Jakob Peterson to the line where he added two more. Thad Jackson and Donny Chavez also got in on the action with a trey at the top of the key and a free throw respectively.  And  just like that, after letting go of the wheel early Sanford was back within two points.
The run would not last.
In the fourth quarter the momentum swung back to Sargent, who started sinking three pointers, two for Kage Pepper and one for Frank Torrez. Before long Sanford began relying heavily on their attempts from outside the arc again.
With a lid on Sanford’s rim the fourth quarter played out similar to the second, with Sanford missing from the outside while Sargent piled up points from the three throw line.  Eddie Gonzalez made good on all eight of his attempts from the charity stripe as the Farmers went 13 of 14 on free throws in the fourth quarter. Gonzalez would lead all scorers for Sargent with 18 points in the win.  
Faucette took the scoring title for Sanford on the night with 12 points.
Sargent are scheduled for a busy weekend with three games, the first of which on Thursday the 24th when they welcome Creede. Then the Farmers begin a four game road trip beginning with Center on the 25th.
Sanford will begin a road trip of their own with a game at Custer County on Friday followed by games at Del Norte on Friday and Sierra Grande the following Tuesday.
