Departments update city council

MONTE VISTA- The Monte Vista City Council met in regular session on Thursday, Nov. 2. Here are the top items to know.

ACLU not filing litigation
City Attorney Karen Lintott reported that the ACLU had said they were impressed with the city of Monte Vista’s quick and appropriate reaction to their report on former Municipal Judge Dan Powell. Lintott  said the ACLU is not pursuing any lawsuits against the city of Monte Vista. Interim Municipal Judge Barbara Zollars has begun working and is investigating the previous practices of the Monte Vista court. Zollars will be making recommendations and discussing her findings. The city council requested a workshop or meeting with Zollars in the near future.

City manager
City Manager Forrest Neuerburg presented his report. Neuerburg stated he had attended Coffee with a Cop which was fairly well attended. Neuerburg said if the trend continues the meetings may outgrow the facility currently being used. “It was good conversation. I think that’s a valuable tool for the chief to meet members of the community and have valuable discussion,” said Neuerburg. Coffee with a Cop is held on the first Wednesday of every month at Java Dave’s.
Neuerburg shared that a land donation given to the city was being eyed by the community garden group. “They are much very interested in that parcel,” he said. The council unanimously approved a motion to allow the city attorney to move forward with a land transaction.

Kids Connection
Kids Connection Director Anika Velasquez provided her monthly report. She stated membership was steady at about 200 members.
She said the First Annual Poker Tournament hosted by Three Guys Farms was successful. There were 18 participants. The turnout was good but they hope to increase attendance in the future. “We had a lot of fun and those that participated were really excited and asked when the next one was,” she said.
Velasquez shared November plans. The children participated in the veterans parade. Kids Connection will also have their annual Thanksgiving feast. During the Holiday Festival Kids Connection will host a pancake breakfast with Santa.
