City works to repair water leak

City of Monte Vista Public Works crew members brave the cold wind to work on a water main leak on Adams Street Friday, April 13. The leak may have been triggered by a temporary pump failure that caused some portions of the city to be without water for about two hours on Thursday evening, April 12. According to Public Works Director Rob Vance, “The pump lost a leg of power and threw the pump into default. We were able to correct the problem and got the pump restarted. We also started another pump just to make sure we had redundancy. A theory is when the pump fired back up it caused a small water hammer and is what caused the leak,” but there is no confirmation that is the exact cause. Some homes and businesses in the immediate vicinity were without water temporarily Friday afternoon as crews completed the repair. Vance stated “The line had a hole in the bottom of the pipe and was repaired with a stainless steel band repair clamp and all water was restored within the two hour window on Friday.”

City Council will hold a public hearing at their Thursday, April 19 meeting to discuss changing the city water rates, raising the minimum gallon usage to incur additional fees over the base rate to 7,500 gallons per month, saving residents about $3.75 per month put reducing the city’s budget partially for water/sewer system maintenance and repairs by approximately $81,000.
