City recognizes officers

MONTE VISTA— Two Monte Vista Police Department officers have been honored for one year of service to the city. The Monte Vista City Council presented the year of service awards during their regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19. Officers Steven Pino and Bryan Ruybal were shown appreciation for their dedication to the community. The officers were joined by the chief of police, family and fellow officers to mark their achievement.

Chief’s report
MVPD Chief John Rosecrans presented his first monthly report to the city council. Rosecrans reported that the first “coffee with a cop” was a success. Officers, the city manager and 10 citizens discussed current events, issues and solutions. Rosecrans stated that the city manager had approved a Facebook page dedicated to the city-wide Neighborhood Watch program.
Rosecrans also shared monthly statistics and updates on specific crimes. Rosecrans reported that on Oct. 9 officers responded to a call of an attempted burglary at Big R. A suspect was caught on camera and was able to damage the door but did not gain entry. Officers viewed the footage and completed reports on the incident. Officers then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The stop led to the arrest of the burglar, an open container charge, driving under revocation and for a warrant, according to Rosecrans.
Rosecrans shared that there were 1311 calls for service in September and 66 citations issued. Both of these numbers are higher than the numbers in August.
The chief shared some information regarding the administrative side of the police department. A test for promotion to sergeant will be held on Oct. 26. This test is also open to outside candidates, said Rosecrans.
There are two new officers on duty. One officer is in training and the other has accepted an offer of conditional hire.
Rosecrans also shared positive news; Big R reached out to K-9 Officer Michael Martinez and K-9 Lena to offer their support to the K-9 program by providing food and treats.
