City of Monte Vista initiates land use code update, encourages public engagement

MONTE VISTA — The City of Monte Vista recently announced the beginning stages of the land use code update, an essential step in ensuring the city’s development aligns with the current needs and future growth. Throughout this process, the city seeks public participation and feedback, with expected completion early in 2024.

DJ Enderle, Planner and Community Development Director for the City of Monte Vista, emphasized the significance of the update, stating, "There are opportunities in the current code to meet the needs of the community and make it relevant to our current city planning. Some pieces of the code such as fencing and short-term rentals are outdated or not addressed at all. We want our residents to be part of the update because it sets the rules for how the city land is used."

Neil Putnam, Planner for KLJ Engineering, shared similar sentiments, underscoring the code's broader effects.

"At first glance, people might not understand the code or why it is important for them to be involved. The code caninfluence the character of the city, property values, growth management, and even how decisions are made forvarious city permits. It’s critical that the citizens of Monte Vista get engaged in this update process to help shape their city," Putnam said.

To facilitate public engagement, the city is planning various events tentatively scheduled for September. These events will provide a platform for community members to voice their concerns and contribute their insights. Additionally, translated materials and translators will be available to ensure inclusivity and accessibility.

Interested participants can sign up for small groups focusing on specific topics of concern.
