Cities and towns week celebrated

MONTE VISTA— The city of Monte Vista celebrated Colorado Cities and Towns Week on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 12. The week highlights and celebrates the value of municipal government and acknowledges the employees and volunteers who make communities a great place to live, work and play.
Monte Vista chose to host a BBQ and open house for its celebration. City employees, city councilors, police officers and department heads were present to meet with citizens, answer questions and provide information. Public works displayed their equipment, as did the Monte Vista Police Department and the Information Technology Department. Children enjoyed getting inside tractors and police cars. A popular item with attendees of all ages was the opportunity to admire the city’s new drone.
The city also took the opportunity to honor two previous members of the Monte Vista Police Department. A plaque with police memorabilia was given to the officers. The first honoree was Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez. Rodriguez served the department for nine years from April 11, 2008 until Sept. 12, 2017. Rodriguez, an exemplary officer, will now be referred to as a member of the Colorado State Patrol. Rodriguez thanked the city, his fellow officers and family for their support. “It has been an honor,” said Rodriguez.
Previous sergeant and police chief Evan Lopez, who is now a member of the Alamosa Police Department, was also honored at the event. A plaque was presented for him as well but Lopez was unable to attend.
Colorado Cities and Towns Week is sponsored by the Colorado Municipal League (CML) and is in its fifth year. CML believes this week is important since municipal government is the level of government closest to its citizens and the one with the most daily impact. Through Colorado Cities and Towns Week municipalities from across the state participate in activities to showcase and celebrate cities and towns and the many services they provide.
