Centauri tops Monte Vista, stays perfect

MONTE VISTA— Last Tuesday evening, Sept. 19 the Centauri (8-0) volleyball squad went into Monte Vista (1-9) and knocked off the Pirates three sets to none.
Monte Vista came into this matchup with a 1-8 record their lone victory coming against The Vanguard School of Colorado Springs. The Falcons sported an untarnished record of 7-0 recently getting a victory over league opponent Alamosa. Last year yielded a similar result with Centauri then as now taking the match three sets to none.
Centauri got things going immediately and took the first set picking up points in clusters with a 6-point lead turning into an 11-point lead before going on a 10 point run to close out the set 25-4. Isabel Prieto and Madison Sowards led the Falcons with five aces and two kills respectively on that first set.
Monte Vista pushed back a little on the second set going on a 5-point run to make the score 11-18 but a strong effort from Centauri’s Kaitlyn Quinlin who tallied 8 digs kept the Falons in control ultimately taking the second set 25-14.
Monte Vista battled for the 3rd set going on a 7-point run to take a 9-5 lead. However the Pirates had a hard time keeping things going picking up points one at a time and while the third set was closer, they still found themselves on the wrong end of a 25-17 set to wrap things up 3-0.
Three more aces in the third set from Prieto took her to a team leading 7 on the night. Ember Canty, Sowards and Caroline Van Berkem who each had three shared the lead in kills for Centauri.
