Burial traditions

The talk of body placement led to an interesting discussion about the tradition of burying deceased loved ones with their head to the west. In the Christian tradition, Harmon said, people are buried with the head to the west so they can rise facing Jesus, who is believed will return from the east on Judgement Day. In the Muslim faith, the dead are buried perpendicular and facing toward Mecca. Other burial traditions include funeral pyres in India, hanging caskets along mountainsides in the Philippines and pressing cremated remains of loved ones into jewelry-like beads in South Korea.
