MONTE VISTA— Over the last few months, the Bill Metz Elementary fourth grade class has been participating in a read-a-thon to pay their way to Colorado’s state capital, Denver. The entire trip is educational as the way to the trip is promoting literacy, and when the students arrive to their destination they will visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Zoo and an IMAX theater.
The overnight trip is being organized for the second year by fourth grade teacher Colleen Vanderpool. Vanderpool states that the trip last year was highly successful, and she was impressed by the activities the children were able to participate in. She has especially fond memories of rocket building and the excitement, fun and valuable experience the students had and expressed.
Vanderpool is being joined and assisted by the other fourth grade teachers. This includes Elizabeth Garcia, Rachael Torres and Sabina Malouff. The teachers have each had a read-a-thon in their classroom with each class competing with the others to see who can raise the most money. Students have asked teachers, parents and community members to pledge or donate money in exchange for their commitment to read for blocks during the day. So far a little over $2,000 has been raised towards the expenses. The fourth grade students have been showing a good commitment towards their goal.
The fourth graders will be well taken care of during their trip. They will be provided transportation, meals and chaperones. The trip will occur on May 1 and 2.
While the read-a-thon is over for this year, the class still needs to raise a couple thousand dollars more. The cost per each student is $50 and includes the museum admission fee, zoo entry fee, class t-shirt, and dinner and lunch.
The class is still accepting sponsorships. It is the hope of the district that all students are able to participate, and for this reason, are very appreciative of all the sponsors, donors and chaperones that are making an exciting trip possible.
To sponsor a student, please write a check to the Monte Vista School District, and write “4th Grade Museum Trip” in the memo line.
