Annual farmers market opens Friday

...

MONTE VISTA—The Monte Vista annual farmers market will begin Friday, July13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 1st and Jefferson streets.
This year marks the sixth season for the farmers market, which offers locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as arts and crafts from local vendors. “Our mission has always been to support locally produced foods from Colorado and New Mexico,” said Deanne Elliot, manager of the farmer’s market.
The farmer’s market location, Elliot added, was chosen because it’s an easy walk for visitors who may want to shop downtown.
The Healthy Habits Mobile Kitchen (MOKI) will again be making an appearance at the Monte Vista Farmer’s Market, which will be the only farmer’s market where MOKI will be available this season. MOKI will offer free tastings, recipe cards and cooking demonstrations every Friday to help teach people how to cook healthy on a shoestring budget with fresh, seasonal produce. Visitors can also buy a meal for just $5 made with the day’s featured produce.
Healthy Habits is a project of the San Luis Valley Foods Coalition in partnership with the Women, Infants and Children’s Program at Valley Wide Health Programs, Inc.
The Monte Vista Farmer’s Market will be held every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Sept. 14. For more information, visit the Monte Vista Farmer’s Facebook page.
